Description Dick Gevers 2013-10-25 09:49:14 CEST
Description of problem:

I am aware this scanner is not well supported under Linux, but it was working well upto Mageia 3, both in simple scan and in xsane. I am not sure whether cups needs to be running (it is not now), but there being no dependency it should not matter.

Presently, I note in sane-backends changelog:
...
* Sat Oct 19 2013 blino <blino> 1.0.24-2.mga4
+ Revision: 533729
- add saned to the scanner group since USB scanner devices are owned by this group
...

And I do have scanner group, but no saned user:

# getent passwd saned
# [ no STDOUT, no STDERR ]

# getent group scanner
scanner:x:489:

So, perhaps the script which should useradd saned is not perfect:

The rpm script ALL reads:
quote
preinstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
/usr/share/rpm-helper/add-group sane $1 scanner
postuninstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
/usr/share/rpm-helper/del-group sane $1 scanner
unquote

I have to remark my current M4 was a fresh install in July 2013 when my HD broke. Maybe I am missing a package that I had earlier, but is not required by this rpm.

Comment 1 Thierry Vignaud 2013-10-27 14:21:24 CET
Is it a new install or an upgrade from mga3?
Comment 2 Dick Gevers 2013-10-27 15:43:33 CET
It is a new install of M3 final, plus backups from a few months earlier as to config files etc. etc. of then current Cauldron and revert to again current Cauldron by immediate upgrade of all packages.
