Is your font corrupt?
It happens on all distros on some HW from times to times (usually on some old Radeon).

Well my video card is a Radeon HD3470, but there is no problem on MGA3 which is installed on the machine as well. The font in the shell (if that's what you mean) looks perfectly normal. However there is a different display problem that I reported as bug 11267.

I can reproduce this. It is not related to vte or gnome-terminal but also happens in xterm. In a tty, $PS1 is set but in an xterm it is not. So maybe it is something in initscripts or /etc/profile.d/ that has changed in the last few days.

I have also noticed that bash-completion is working fine in a tty but not in an xterm.
Comment 5 Reinout van Schouwen 2014-11-16 20:54:47 CET
Cannot reproduce this any more on my new machine, the laptop that showed this problem has died.
Comment 6 Dick Gevers 2014-11-16 21:16:35 CET
Is there presently anyone who can still reproduce it? Else it should be closed.
Comment 7 Reinout van Schouwen 2014-12-27 22:53:40 CET
Nope.
