eeeemail Journal is here: http://waesvanm.home.xs4all.nl/QA/journalctl-a cc'ing Dave, who had the same problem.
He saw errors in ~/.xsession-errors gnome-session-check-accelerated:

davidwhodgins I disabled translucency hoping that would help, but then it already goes wrong before reaching the login screen. After re-enabling it the login screen is reached again. What is the difference between "GNOME" and "Gnome" in the DE list in the login-password screen? This is the same as I encountered in the live iso images previously https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10914#c7 CC:

tmb Sorry, meant virtualbox classical installs, not live.

journal from recently installed Gnome Live DVD
I have a personal workaround for this with the intel 915 driver for the 82855GME graphic controller: in my laptop i configured the vesa generic driver, and forced the screen resolution and gnome starts, I can login with a full desktop and runs smoothly May be the intel driver is not capable to run the composite extension....
