After installing using the 4alpha1 pre-release gnome i586 dvd under vb,
launching gedit caused the vb session to start using 100% cpu, and X
became unresponsive. After using alt+ctrl+bs (host key + bs under vb) twice,
was able to log in again, but screen goes black, with a moveable mouse cursor.

Switched to a console on tty2. logged in as root. top shows gnome-shell using
100% cpu, and systemd-journal using 20-50% cpu. killall -9 gnome-shell does
not kill it.

No errors noticeable in dmesg, journalctl, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log

After installing vboxadditions-kernel-desktop586-latest, (so I could mount
a shared folder), and then rebooting, the screen goes black and the guest
becomes unresponsive.

Trying to boot to run level 3, hangs after
"Failed to start Software RAID monitoring and management".

I can boot to run level 1, but there are no obvious errors shown in
journalctl -a, from end of the prior boot.

Now starting gnome on an i586 vb install, gnome-shell exits with the
.xsession-errors message
** (process:4334): WARNING **: software acceleration check failed: Child process exited with code 1
and screen showing the message "Oh no. Something has gone wrong".

So while it isn't using 100% cpu any more, it still doesn't work.

Strange, I can't reproduce...
Both on VM and on my laptop, GNOME is working as expected...

Are you uptodate? Perhaps your box was unstable between the update of GNOME 3.9.92...

Fully up to date.

Trying to start gnome in a vb guest from kdm, ~/.xsession-errors has
gnome-session-is-accelerated: No composite extension.
gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256
gnome-session-is-accelerated: No composite extension.
gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256

If I switch to gdm, it also fails to start.
vboxadditions-kernel-desktop-latest is installed. And kde4 is working.

This is happening both with i586 and x86_64 vb guests.

I'll close this bug as fixed, as I've overwritten the vb guest
with an alpha3 livecd test, where gnome is working.

On irc, tmb did mention he had to roll back the icu-51.2 libs
to get gnome working, so the problem may show up again later.
