Description Desmond Armstrong 2013-07-16 11:31:06 CEST
Strange problem, everything opens with VLC. The only way to open correctly is to use file manager.
The extension on the file name is not recognized.
This morning I downloaded Mageia 3 live kde and in k3b tried to show in folder, so VLC opened. Just how can .iso cause VLC to open?

In fact Places - Downloads opens VLC - very disturbing.

Totally repeatable.

At least the File Manager works, apparently, normally.

How are you trying to open these files?

No idea - it may be set in the default applications:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/404821-how-do-you-change-default-web-browser-kde4.html

<<<
Try going to Desktop Settings/Personalised Settings -> Default Applications -> Web Browser -> Change to 'in the following broswer' -> browse for firefox
>>>

Which desktop are you using?

OK, does it happen in a new UNIX user account?

It's hard to tell from your description, but if you're wondering why VLC would open for an ISO, it's probably because the ISO is assumed to be a video.

I'm not exactly sure what algorithm is used, but if a package is capable of opening a filetype, it will be added to the list of possible opener applications for that filetype (which you will see in KDE if you right-click on the file and select Open With). The first one listed is what you'll get if you just double-click on the file.

This may have to do with the order in which you install packagaes, or the set of packages you install. If you have no other package capable of handling a particular filetype, and VLC can possibly handle it, then VLC will be used. If the algorithm is "last in - first choice", then installing VLC last would make it the first choice for all of the filetypes it thinks it can handle.

You can change this by right-clicking (in KDE) on a file of a particular type, selecting Properties, and changing the app for opening all files of this type.

I am using Gnome 3 in Classic mode.

I have been checking around and by and large if one goes through the File Manager (Files 3.6.3) things are correctly registered and the top item in the selection is correct.

However on the Taskbar we select 'PLaces' and every single item under that opens with VLC left click or right click, it makes no difference. That is; 'Home Folder', 'Desktop', 'Documents', 'Music', 'Pictures', 'Videos', 'Downloads' and 'Computer'. all bring up VLC.

However 'Music' did find some music in my profile (mp3). That was OK.

Hell Desmond,

OK, does it happen in a new UNIX user account? Here with GNOME 3 in Classic mode (which took me a lot of time to figure out how to use - one has to install the gnome-classic-session package and then select it in the desktop selection in the display manager), and a new user, all the links under places open fine and do not involve VLC. So it seems like it was a configuration glitch on your machine.

Hello Desmond,

I have it here in Cauldron:

http://mageia.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/mageia/distrib/cauldron/x86_64/media/core/release/gnome-classic-session-3.8.3.1-2.mga4.noarch.rpm

This bug was filed against Cauldron - are you using a different version of Mageia?
Comment 7 Desmond Armstrong 2013-07-17 11:30:03 CEST
I am using Mageia 3 32 bit, I am not sure, is this Cauldron? How do I show version?

I have downloaded the files (32 bit) from the mirror but, it can't be installed because of some missing shell extensions.

If I am not using Cauldron, how can I upgrade?

Certainly if you can help me here then I shall do so.

It is a little disturbing that when after downloading gnome-classic-session that I try to 'Show in Folder' VLC comes up.

No, it's not Cauldron, so I'm setting this bug to Mageia version 3. Mageia has numbered releases - 1, 2, 3 and Cauldron is a rolling branch that eventually stabilises on the next version - it will become 4 at present.

You can see the Mageia release by doing:

[SHELL]
shlomif@telaviv1:~$ cat /etc/mageia-release
Mageia release 4 (Cauldron) for x86_64
shlomif@telaviv1:~$
[/SHELL]

You should not install them if you're planning to continue using Mageia 3.

> If I am not using Cauldron, how can I upgrade?
>

You normally should not upgrade because Cauldron is subject to flux and breakages, but if you're interested, see:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Cauldron

I can help you with Mageia 3 too. I have VMs for that.

OK, can you try all that in a new UNIX user? See:

Version: Cauldron => 3

Comment 9 Shlomi Fish 2013-07-17 13:41:18 CEST
Hi,

I tried installing VLC inside an i586 (32-bit) Mageia 3 VM and after I started GNOME 3 in Classic Mode (from the LXDM menu) everything seems to be working fine - the Places links are opened using nautilus, and I cannot reproduce your symptoms. I even tried playing a URL using VLC and it played it fine, and then after I exited GNOME and went back, everything is still OK.

Yes I created new user and all OK there. So I am going through now my profile hoping that something in the hidden files may be causing problems, but I have not found it so far.

Of course my profile is carried across from previous. If you have pointer then I can fix, but at least I have workrounds.

This is curious as I have another machine which I have similarly upgraded but I don't have problems there.

Thank You for all your work, I shall press on. I shall report back once I have isolated the problem.

The much more serious bug is the one that I have reported previously 10727 where it is impossible to connect to an uncrypted Wi-Fi where there are several access points.

Nice, hope you are having luck with it. Can I close this bug?

Yes,
I have been doing a lot of testing and as the problem is not showing on another machine and not on another profile I think let's close this bug.
