Description David Walser 2013-06-30 18:04:17 CEST
Squid uses the following command to detect the presence of pod2man to build some man pages:
echo | pod2man >/dev/null

If that fails, the DB auth helper and DB log daemon are not built.

In Mageia 2 and Mageia 3, the command has no output and exits successfully.

On Cauldron, it gives the message "pod2man: unable to format" and exits with an error.

This looks like a deliberate upstream change. Rather than changing that behaviour for all applications in Mageia, it's probably going to be better to fix squid's check. For example, the following works in mga 2, 3 and Cauldron:

echo =encoding US-ASCII | pod2man >/dev/null

Or simply:

which pod2man >/dev/null 2>&1

Thanks. I've passed a note along to squid-dev@squid-cache.org, which is moderated, but it should get through I would think.
Comment 3 Dan Fandrich 2013-07-23 02:00:08 CEST
I took a quick look at the upstream bzr repository, and the problematic config.test file has been completely removed. The problem may already been resolved in the next release.
Comment 4 David Walser 2013-07-23 02:13:31 CEST
There were actually three config.test files using it. I wonder if those files just aren't visible through bzr and are generated by something when the tarballs are made.
Comment 5 Dan Fandrich 2013-07-23 02:36:23 CEST
All three were removed, and references in Makefile.am are gone, so it looks like they're really gone.
Comment 6 David Walser 2013-08-22 22:43:31 CEST
I worked around this for now in squid by patching the checks to use echo =encoding US-ASCII, as Dan suggested in Comment 1 (r469820).

pod2man is causing problems with another package too:
http://pkgsubmit.mageia.org/autobuild/cauldron/x86_64/core/log/squidanalyzer-5.1-1.mga4.src.rpm/build.0.20130818145131.log
Comment 8 Jerome Quelin 2014-06-02 15:55:58 CEST
Sorry for the time to answer this bug.
As said in comment 1, it's a deliberate upstream change. As such, please report bugs to affected packages rather than to pod2man. Should we close this bug?

Comment 9 David Walser 2014-06-02 16:00:58 CEST
Yes, other projects are just going to have to deal with these unfortunate changes in pod2man it seems. It's difficult for some as not all developers are using the newest version, so they continue to have problems (squidanalyzer has had a few more of these issues since this report, for instance). Anyway, there's nothing we can do about it.
