Description Luis Menina 2013-05-30 12:16:30 CEST
Description of problem:
This problem has existed for ages... You have an ultra-long description string in the .desktop file associated with Thunderbird, in French:
"Mozilla Thunderbird (courrier électronique)".

All other languages have a short string, just with the name of the program. Firefox has no such thing.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
all

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run Thunderbird in GNOME 3, in the french locale.
2. Look at the top bar: near the Thunderbird icon, the text is: "Mozilla Thunderbird (courrier électronique)", which is more than enough

Expected comportment:
The program name displayed near the Thunderbird icon should be "Mozlla Thunderbird", just like every other locale.

Reproducible:

To fix this, this is just a matter of changing the /usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop file. Replace the
"Name[fr]=Mozilla Thunderbird (courrier électronique)" line by:
"Name[fr]=Mozilla Thunderbird"

Is the .desktop file handled by mageia or should I report this upstream?
Comment 2 Luis Menina 2013-05-30 12:19:59 CEST
Also, the package name is just "thunderbird", and Firefox displays "Firefox", not "Mozilla Firefox", so should the "Mozilla" prefix be dropped alltogether for all locales?
Comment 3 Luis Menina 2013-09-26 18:24:29 CEST
I'm pretty sure this is still valid in cauldron. Would be nice to fix.

Version: 3 => Cauldron

Or it could be :
"Name[fr]=Mozilla Thunderbird (courriel)"
according to the accepted term by l'Academie Française, if that isn't too long.

In any case, the suggested workaround will work, editing the file :
 /usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop

"Mozilla Thunderbird (courriel)" is still too long... Every other language just has "Mozilla Thunderbird", as I said in the bug description. The shorter, the better.

That is handled by Mageia, see http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/thunderbird/current/SOURCES/thunderbird.desktop?view=markup

As currently nearly all the Name[xx] values except the french one values "Mozilla Thunderbird" I'd propose to change it for all of them to just "Thunderbird".

Although I'm not sure about the translated values for Name[xx] ... does it make sense to translate a proper name at all? IMHO it should be sufficient if we keep the translated GenericName and Comment values, no?

Yes I think you can drop all Name[xx], it's indeed rare that software names need to be translated. I'm not sure users would understand what Oiseau de tonnerre or Donnervogel would be :p

Dropping the "Mozilla" part seems ok to me, Firefox only has "Firefox" and not "Mozilla Firefox" in its desktop file.

Sorry forgot about this. Changed in cauldron as agreed:
http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages?view=revision&revision=907362

For the change Mozilla Thunderbird => Thunderbird seems there are some more changes involved, have to check about that.
