text/plain Are you using a KVM switch? Could you try changing the driver manually to the Xorg VESA driver? after booting: - press Alt+Ctrl+F1 - login as root and launch drakx11 - open "graphics cards" and manually select the Xorg VESA driver - close this tool and agree to the changes - restart the display manager service: service dm restart then try logging in again. NEEDINFO Yes I am using a KVM switch Your instructions worked, I was able to set the driver to Xorg VESA, and KDE was then able to start. I am able to reboot the system and the new driver setting remains and the system now starts KDE. Please attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Does removing the KVM switch make it work with the default driver (radeon) for you card? I see similar reports related to KVM, but the look old and fixed a long time ago. Removing the KVM switch and running the wires directly to the system did not help. After removing the switch, I did a complete new install from the Mageia Alpha1 disk. Again when the system boots using the default driver, KDE does not start, just a black screen with a login prompt. The default driver is: "ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier" Attached is the xorg.conf file you requested. I did try a few other drivers and found that if I set it to: "ATI Radeon HD2000 and later (vesa/fglrx)" will also allow KDE to start. Created attachment 27 [details]
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
I have one box with the ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier card with the same problem, so what I usually do is run XFdrake and choose a driver that works more or less then reboot and then it sets up correctly. It does this with all distros that I have tried. CC:

genomega I use this system to test Mandriva releases, and I have not had to change the driver before. Just now I have installed Mandriva 2010.2 on this same system, (a new install, not upgrade) and there is no additional configuration necessary. KDE just starts. I also observe that Mandriva also is using the "ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier" driver but it works OK under Mandriva. I am attaching the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf from Mandriva 2010.2 as reference. Created attachment 34 [details]
Xorg.0.log from Mandriva 2010.2 install

xorg.conf from mandriva 2010.2
I think this is a duplicate of bug 78. If you have any other DE's installed (GNOME, XFCE, LXDE) login, then launch systemsettings -> Desktop Effects and make sure they're disabled. If you don't have any other DE's, from tty1 (Alt+Ctrl+F1) use vi to edit /home/your-user-name/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc under the [Compositing] section put: Enabled=false on a new line. then try logging in.

thierry.vignaud Hi, I do not have any desktop effects enabled. I did a new install off of the Mageia disk and then modified the file as you say above and that did not help. I still cannot get the default "ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier" driver to work. I noticed that in Mandriva on this same system, the kwinrc file has only 2 lines: ListMode=0 ShowTabBox=true I set the file to be exactly what is in Mandriva 2010 and that still did not help. This trace is useless. Please download both https://bugs.mageia.org/attachment.cgi?id=121 and https://bugs.mageia.org/attachment.cgi?id=122 Then enable the core/debug_release media/repository and install x11-server-debug, x11-driver-video-ati-debug, glibc-debug Then, as root, just run "sh ./Xgdb2.sh" on a text terminal, then switch back to X11 until it segfaults. Hi, I have tested with Mageia Beta 1 disk and the problem is resolved. I did a new clean install on the same system and KDE starts and does not crash. It is still using the same ATI Radeon driver that it was before. Whatever the problem was, is fixed now. Thanks. OK, thanks for the feedback. Closing. Status:
