Description Morgan Leijström 2013-05-09 10:48:26 CEST
Minor aesthetic problem

All backgrounds are correctly sized, except just the one which have the animated boiling cauldron, that is displayed between logging in, and KDE desktop is loaded.

So with the default background the circles are circles in the login screen, then switches to oval shapes (and moved horisontally) while KDE loads and cauldron boils, then switch back to circles.

Screen resolution 2560x1600

I figured it was only a matter of time until someone hit this.

Ksplash, and Mageia as such only has resolutions up to 1920x1440, so anything higher than that and funny things start to happen.

We will fix this with MGA 4 as we don't have the time or the artwork for it now.

Maybe it should be set as "NEW" against Cauldron, if we want to work on this for Mageia 4?

Yes that seems better, it will be closed once we confirm the planning for MGA4.

As a workaround to make the problem much less noticeable, is to from that image delete everything except the boiling cauldron, on a even coloured background.

Then there will never be oval circles, especially not oval circles side by side with the normal circles when it blends to desktop.
Comment 5 Donald 2013-05-13 16:52:09 CEST
While that would work, I don't feel that comrimising the experience for the rest of the resolutions is worth while, and the release is too soon to test some clever system to have it switch when an unsupported resolution is detected.

I can provide a ksplash for very high resolution like this at the end of the month once I return from holiday as I have no files with me to make the theme, but otherwise, I feel that this can be left as it is for release.

If you want to implement your idea, then by all means please do so.

Such programming is not my cup of tea, just wanted to help with an idea :)

Should be fixed in latest mageia-kde4-config, can you confirm please.

Thanks.
Comment 9 Rémi Verschelde 2014-01-09 13:08:33 CET
It's not fixed yet on my 1920x1080 monitor; do you know if mageia-kde4-config was rebuilt after you made your git fixes?
Comment 10 Donald 2014-01-09 13:13:57 CET
It should never have effected your resolution as support for 1920x1080 was always present, it was the resolution I tested the system on.

Which background does ksplash have? If it is the new one it is post fixes.

Did you have this problem with MGA3?
Comment 11 Rémi Verschelde 2014-01-09 13:19:56 CET
It does display the new background, and I already had the issue with Mageia 3. I hadn't read comment 1 then and thought the bug report also applied to my case.
Comment 12 Donald 2014-01-09 13:23:15 CET
See reply to email, your bug is reported somewhere here and the fix is beyond me.
THis one relates purely to ksplash.
Comment 13 Donald 2014-01-20 12:31:29 CET
Can we confirm that this bug is fixed with latest ksplash in mageia-kde4-config-20140119 please?
Comment 14 Morgan Leijström 2014-01-20 14:37:07 CET
Cannot run mga4 at this screen at work now.
Is mageia-kde4-config-20140119 available for mga3?
Comment 15 Donald 2014-01-20 15:03:51 CET
I'll roll a separate ksplash for you to test, that way you can stay with the mga rpms easily.
Comment 16 Donald 2014-01-20 15:46:36 CET
Please test these files, both should give the same result, however, mga4-1.tar.gz will offer a large saving on size.
MGA4.tar.gz is the ksplash currentlyin cauldron.

Thanks

Comment 17 Morgan Leijström 2014-01-20 16:40:54 CET
I put the contents of mga4-1.tar.gz in /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Default

Now i get the nice mga4 flowers after entering my login, before desktop shows, and they look right :)

(and before and after i have the mga 3 bubbles)
Comment 18 Donald 2014-01-20 17:07:31 CET
Thats good, just to confirm, you have the amimation in ksplash as well?
For future reference, you can install themes in systemsetting > workspace appearance > splash screen

It seems that you used previously stretched background for some resolutions, such as e.g. 1920x1080, instead of using the same background as for the desktop.

Here is a version with non-stretched backgrounds (I copied the backgrounds from /usr/share/mga/backgrounds/ and remove the logo): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3QrDuzH5ZN1M2x2VWdVZDFfRnM/edit?usp=sharing

Is there a reason not to use these backgrounds in the MGA4.tar.gz archive, where you provide a background image for each aspect ratio?
Comment 20 Donald 2014-01-20 18:06:26 CET
Look in the mga-kde4-config spec, the scaling is done there, in the source file there is just 2560x1920, every other resolution is created from it. Thats the only reason.
Comment 21 Rémi Verschelde 2014-01-20 18:08:51 CET
Ok, I'll have a look at it tomorrow.

Yes after i pressed login, i see the five bubbles coming up from the cauldron one after the other on the mga4 background, then it switches to real desktop with mga3 background.
Comment 23 Donald 2014-01-21 13:30:53 CET
As the aspect ratio's are as such fixed i am closing this, yes the image is still scaled, but that isn't a new bug and doesn't break the system too badly.

We can open new bugs for scaling improvements for the improvements that are in the pipeline.
